Electrical Safety in the Workplace

Electrical Safety in the Workplace

by | Dec 19, 2022 | Community

Electricity is one of the most important power sources we use every day. But if electrical safety is not managed properly, it can cause serious injury and even death.

Between 2003–15, 142 workers died as a result of contact with electricity (an average of 11 workers each year) – Source: Safe Work Australia Here are 5 simple steps to keep in mind to help control the risk in your workplace:

1) Electrical Safety: Avoid using double adapters

While these handy adapters seem like a quick and easy solution, they are hazardous to use as they do not have circuit/overload protection and, therefore, pose a greater risk of an electrical fire due to overload.

2) Electrical Safety: Don’t run extension leads across walkways

Extension leads should always be laid safely in order to prevent them from becoming a trip hazard. This includes making sure they are not going to be squashed beneath furniture or walked over in places like corridors or walkways.

3) Electrical Safety: Check for damaged PowerPoint and light switches

Cracked switches can expose electrical components which could cause serious harm so it’s important to always check and report any cracks or damages no matter how minor they may appear to be.

4) Replace old fluorescent light fittings

Fluorescent light fittings run hot and the plastic becomes brittle over time. It’s a good idea to consider replacing them with energy-efficient LEDs.

5) Check leads before plugging in appliances

Cords should be in good condition and regularly checked for faults before use. So the next time you go to plug in your vacuum or power tool, take a few seconds to check the lead is safe to use, it can be a real life-saver… literally!
